April, 1986: Captain Comet continues to spurn Maxima's advances. Glynix, princess of an alien world, arrives on Earth to summon the help of Supergirl (who once aided her), and Captain Comet is transported with Glynix back to her world. Meanwhile, Melisande reveals that Karin Grace (Goldstar), now drastically changed by the star-band, has been manipulating Rick Flag. After Goldstar attacks Flag and leaves, he summons a team to go after her, but Maxima takes charge and brings Gilotina of the Female Furies with her. Captain Comet and Glynix arrive on the planet Liquel II, where he must fight another champion to decide the fate of the planet, according to a figure that is supposedly Darkseid. Maxima, Melisande, and Gilotina follow Goldstar to the Colorado Rockies, where she has created a huge palace for herself. Rick Flag, Maxima, Melisande, and Gilotina battle Goldstar. On Liquel II, Captain Comet notes that the beaten Vartox is beamed up to a ship, so he deliberately allows the next champion, Draaga, to win the fight and is beamed up to the ship himself. On Earth, Rick Flag manages to break through to Karin Grace's mind by declaring his love for her, and she removes the star-band, which Melisande throws into the ocean. On Liquel II, Captain Comet discovers that the supposed Darkseid is actually a pair of aliens who trick worlds into sending their champions to fight so they can make a profit off the holovids. On Liquel II, Captain Comet is preparing to return to Earth when Vartox convinces him to visit his home world of Tynola instead. Just as they reach the planet, they discover a shield blocking the planet. As Vartox attacks it, the parasitic field drains his hyper-energy. On Earth, as Rick Flag and Karin Grace are making up for lost time, the lovesick Maxima decides to go find Captain Comet herself by tracing his powerful mind. On Tynola, Captain Comet saves Vartox from the energy drain. Together, the two discover that the planet's attacker is Starbreaker. Maxima and Melisande arrive at that moment, and Maxima attacks Starbreaker, only to be drained of energy. While the others defeat Starbreaker, Vartox and Maxima make a romantic connection, and she decides to stay on Tynola as the mate of Vartox. Captain Comet and Melisande are sent back to Earth.
